But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
As verse 16 says, when we turn our hearts to the Lord, the veil that hides the glory of God is removed. From that point on, we are able to see in the “glass”—which I believe refers to the Word of God—the glory of the Lord.
Before this, all we could see was the person who, like Moses, had seen Christ’s glory. Even he appeared disfigured and as if he were hiding something. Prior to turning our hearts to the Lord, those who had already done so seemed strange to us. We couldn’t tell whether we should pity them for being so different or despise them for what appeared to be their arrogance or self righteousness.
But once we’ve turned our hearts to the Lord, we’re suddenly free to see the glory of the Lord. He becomes plain, clear, and obvious in the Book, and apparent in those who love Him.
Not that we are made suddenly perfect and Christlike. On the contrary, we are changed gradually—slowly, step by step—and only as the Spirit of the Lord works in us. Each time we open the glass, we behold again the glory of the Lord.
