And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
People will, from time to time, make a statement such as, “this thing is from the pit of hell.” Depending on the reference, they may be making light of a thing, or they may be speaking of something they consider especially heinous. Regardless, the statement is transcendent; it moves an earthly object or action into the realm of the unearthly— from the natural to the spiritual. To some, it even moves the thing from the real to the imaginary.
The Word of God uses this transcendent tactic in this text, and it reveals a few things worthy of meditation.
First, there is great danger in thinking of hell as imaginary, superstitious, or pretend.
God, Jesus, the Apostles, and the very Word of God make certain we understand that hell is a literal, eternal, and active place.
Second, things in the unseen world are more active and influential in our earthly existence than we can imagine.
That transcendent terminology points to the transcendent nature of the other world. Heaven and hell, God and Satan, angels and devils alike cross that veil more frequently than we recognize. Truly, the tongue may be inspired from the portals of glory—or set on fire of hell.
Third, hell is not an imaginary place.
Real people really go there for all eternity.
I pray daily that my tongue might be touched by coals from God’s altar so that I may lead others to eternal salvation. How much better is that than to have it set on fire of hell and be used to discourage others—or, worse yet, to point them in the direction of everlasting condemnation.

Words That Burn or Bless: Hell Is No Imaginary Place
🔥 Guard Your Tongue – James 3:6 (KJV) Challenge! 🔥
James 3:6 warns that “the tongue is a fire… and is set on fire of hell.” Your words matter—they can build up or burn down, heal or harm. This powerful verse reminds us that the unseen world touches our daily lives more than we realize.
👉 Here’s the challenge: Pray that your tongue will be touched by coals from God’s altar, not flames from hell, and let your words lead others toward Christ—not condemnation.
