But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?
Right away, I’m struck by how little human nature has changed. The book of James is believed to be one of the earliest New Testament texts—written in a time of great persecution, not long after the crucifixion of our Lord, and easily within the lifespans of the Apostles.
And still, these early Christians—before there ever was such a thing as a church building—respected the rich and “despised the poor.”
It’s a human thing.
We see the rich as productive, industrious, and hard-working.
We view them as successful, valuable.
We often think of them as blessed of God.
We see the poor as lazy, slothful, slackers.
We view them as a drain on society.
We generally assume they are not under God’s blessing.
And we are frequently wrong on both accounts.
But what struck me most is that this attitude is directly tied to James 2:10 (KJV):
For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
Think of it: the “one point” that might make a man guilty of the whole law could be his attitude toward the poor.
I’m thankful for James 2:12 (KJV):
So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.
We who are saved are not judged by the law, but by “the law of liberty.”
And that is the law by which I wish to treat every man.

One Point of Guilt: The Sin of Favoritism
šØ Are you judging others by their appearance or possessions? James 2 shows that favoritism isn't just unkind—it's a violation of God's law. But praise God, we who are saved are judged by the law of liberty!
š How do you respond when you see someone in need? Do you instinctively judge—or extend grace?
