Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.
He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.
A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.
We often emphasize being bold witnesses for the Lord, but sometimes we forget that in the New Testament there were moments when people were told to be silent. In certain cases, it was because the witness was not qualified (such as those possessed by demons). I have no desire to encourage a lost man, a worldly man, or someone unsure of their faith to witness. There were also times when Jesus Himself said it simply was not the proper time.
In our text, the Pharisees are preparing to destroy Jesus, and He shifts His ministry focus toward the Gentiles. Notice how this passage describes that ministry:
- It will be a spiritual ministry.
Though judgment is involved, it is not political, military, or coerced. The weapons of our warfare are not carnal. It is the work of the Holy Spirit. - It will be a peaceful ministry.
There is no strife, no shouting, and no argument. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient… (2 Timothy 2:24–26). If we truly trust the Holy Spirit, we will not feel compelled to hurt others to get our way. - It will be a victorious ministry.
Victory does not come in a hurry, but it will come. The ministry God anoints is gentle and patient, waiting until He sends forth judgment unto victory.
I believe it to also be a certain ministry.
It’s rooted in the promises of God.

Strong Enough to Stay Gentle: Bruised, Not Broken
Are you searching for real Bible answers?
Matthew 12:18–20 shows us that Jesus’ strength was not loud or forceful—it was Spirit-filled, gentle, and victorious. Many people wonder: How can I live with that same balance of strength and compassion today?
