But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.
More than a prophet.
In just a few verses, Jesus will say, “And if ye will receive it, …” The truth is, if one will not receive it, there’s not much we can do. “Wisdom is justified of her children.” No one else needs to justify her.
John the Baptist is one of the most controversial figures in history—certainly in Christian history. Some say he was the last of the Old Testament prophets and deny his relationship with the Christian faith. Some say he was only the “baptizer,” rejecting the title “the Baptist” in preference to describing his action.
But Jesus said he was a prophet—and more.
John the Baptist was the first sent from God with authority to baptize. Every one of the original members of the first New Testament church, including Christ Himself, was baptized by John, who was “the Baptist.” The one elected to take Judas’ place, according to the apostles, had to be baptized by that same Baptist. The authority to baptize was passed along at the time of the Great Commission to the churches whose foundation was the apostles, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20). I believe the prophets mentioned in that verse are likely a reference to John the Baptist.
I understand that those who refuse to accept this truth have that right. But those who receive it know it is true. John the Baptist was a prophet—and much more. He was the man sent from God, the beginning authority of New Testament Baptist faith.
