Matthew 10:2 (KJV) From Followers to the Foundation Stones

Matthew 10:2 (KJV)

Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;

This is the first time they are called apostles. Just one verse earlier they were simply called disciples. Two things mark the transition: first, the giving of power in verse one, and second, the sending in verse five. They now had both authority and commission. They were no longer just students, followers, the curious, or seekers. They were sent.

Gill makes an interesting observation about the number twelve:

“The number ‘twelve’ is either in allusion to the twelve spies that were sent by Moses into the land of Canaan, or to the twelve stones in Aaron's breastplate; or to the twelve fountains the Israelites found in the wilderness; or to the twelve oxen on which the molten sea stood in Solomon's temple; or to the twelve gates in Ezekiel's temple; or rather, to the twelve patriarchs and the tribes which sprang from them; that as they were the fathers of the Jewish nation, which was typical of God's chosen people, so these were to be the instruments of spreading the Gospel, not only in Judea but in all the world, and of planting Christian churches there.”

The apostles became the foundational stones for Christ’s churches.

Ephesians 2:20 (KJV)
And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

As such, the authority and the commission no longer belong to one man, but to the new man—the body of Christ, the local New Testament Baptist church. We no longer have apostles. In their place, God has given us His churches.

From Followers to the Foundation Stones: Christ’s Authority Now Rests in His Churches

✝️ Who Holds the Authority Today?
When Jesus gave His disciples both power and commission, they became apostles — the foundation of His churches (Ephesians 2:20). Today, that authority doesn’t rest in one man but in Christ’s churches.
