No man shall take the nether or the upper millstone to pledge: for he taketh a man's life to pledge.
In the days when this was written, the people were predominantly agrarian. Raising animals and growing grain crops was both their lifestyle and livelihood. The millstones were essential for turning that grain into food. Whether a man ground the grain to sell or for personal use, to be without his millstones was to be without the means to provide for himself and his family.
Now this man finds himself in need.
- It might be financial assistance.
- Perhaps he needs to lease a piece of equipment for a time.
- Maybe he has reason to hire help temporarily.
Generally, those giving such assistance require assurances they’ll be repaid. They want collateral—something of equal or greater value to secure their investment. God had no law against collateral, but He did give this caveat: don’t take a man’s livelihood as a pledge.
God cares for life.
- He required life for life.
- He insisted that the blood of animals not be eaten, out of respect for life.
- He provided ways to care for those who had little or nothing.
- He gave instructions for “battlements” to prevent injury or death in the home.
- He limited the terms of slavery and indenturement.
People, by nature of the corruption of the flesh, are less caring. Without God’s instruction, we’d gladly take a man’s livelihood if it meant our own advancement. But followers of Christ have always been the most compassionate people on earth.
Yes, there have been those who corrupted even the teachings of Christ, and unbelievers are quick to point them out. But honest followers of Jesus are the most upright, charitable, caring, and merciful people. They’ve learned from their Father to value and love the lives of others.

Compassion Over Collateral: God Cares
💬 God’s Word still speaks to our world today.
Deuteronomy 24:6 reminds us that God values life, compassion, and fairness. He doesn’t just care about laws—He cares about people.
In a world quick to take advantage, this verse calls believers to protect and provide, not to profit from another’s hardship. True faith shows up in how we treat others.
