Deuteronomy 23:5 (KJV) The Curse That Became a Gift

Deuteronomy 23:5 (KJV)

Nevertheless the LORD thy God would not hearken unto Balaam; but the LORD thy God turned the curse into a blessing unto thee, because the LORD thy God loved thee.

John Gill says, “The Lord overruled his tongue, and put such words into his mouth, that instead of cursing Israel, he blessed him.”

It is fitting from this text to be reminded and reassured that our Father rules in the affairs of men. Whenever it appears that the world intends us evil—to curse us, if you will—God is well able, and indeed does, overrule so that what they intend for a curse instead becomes a blessing.

Being transparent and honest with the account, one would be hard-pressed to see the blessing—and so it may be with us.

When a government official rules against our church,
this happens frequently these days. Building permits are denied, or else the fees are exorbitant. Still, God is overruling, and that “curse” is a blessing.

When Christians were imprisoned and even executed for their faith,
which we have seen little of in the last two centuries but could well see again in the near future—still, God is overruling, and the “curse” is a blessing.

Joseph’s brothers plotted to kill him, sold him into slavery, and lied to their father, saying a lion had slain him. For two decades Joseph lived out of touch with his family, in a foreign land—enslaved, abused, and imprisoned. But when all was said and done, Joseph professed, “Ye meant it for evil; but God meant it for good.”

This is a matter of faith, I confess. But when faith sees God overruling curses into blessings, life becomes immediately more meaningful.

💡 When life feels unfair, remember—God still overrules.
Just like He turned Balaam’s curse into a blessing (Deuteronomy 23:5), He can turn your trials into triumphs.
