Mark 3:30 (KJV) In Danger—But Not Condemned

Mark 3:30 (KJV)

Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit.

The subject of the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is much misunderstood and misapplied. Charismatics and Pentecostals believe a person can lose their salvation because of it. I recently met a man who believed it was impossible for him to be saved because of it.

Usually, people define blasphemy against the Holy Spirit as speaking evil about the Spirit — ascribing some work of the Spirit as being from the devil. The Charismatic crowd would say that calling speaking in tongues or the ministry of a faith healer “demonic” is this blasphemy. The young man I met recently believed he had blasphemed the Holy Spirit because, while using marijuana, he believed he distinctly heard the Holy Spirit tell him to quit — but he did not.

In my mind, this passage makes the blasphemy very clear: it’s denying Christ. It’s rejecting that He is God, the Saviour. It’s putting religion, relationships, politics — anything — in such a position that we fail to see Christ for who He is: the way, the truth, and the life — the only access to God the Father.

Such a person is in danger of eternal damnation. But notice, he is not condemned to such damnation. The truth is, so long as he is alive, whatever blinds his eyes and prevents him from seeing Christ as Saviour may yet be removed. He is in danger while he denies Christ, but he is not finally condemned unless he dies in this state.

What one thinks of Christ is vitally important — it steers what he says of Christ. But ultimately, it is not what one thinks or says that saves or condemns. It’s what one does with Christ. No matter what we’ve said, believed, or done religiously, we are only saved when we place our sole trust in Christ. All others remain in danger of eternal damnation. If they do not place their trust in Christ before death, that danger becomes their reality.
