And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.
The notable thing in this account is the healing of the crippled man.
- Much is made of his four friends who brought him.
- Much is made of them letting him down through the roof.
- Much is made of his healing.
Truly, all who were there “glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.”
But I’d like to point out first that Jesus’ concern with the man was that his sins be forgiven. The healing was secondary in the mind of our Saviour. We are too quick to put our focus on things of a temporal, secondary, earthly nature. Being but flesh, we put the flesh first.
Speaking of focus, I’d like to point out that this event began with a crowd of people. It would not have been hundreds—probably not even one hundred—as they were gathered in a house in Capernaum. Perhaps it was fifteen to twenty-five people. It was enough that they could not get the man sick of the palsy in the door.
Jesus was not feeding them. He was not healing them. He wasn’t plotting a way to take over the government. When the people gathered together, the thing Jesus considered most important to do was to preach the Word unto them.
The most important thing that can happen today is the preaching of the Word.
- We can’t feed every hungry person.
- We don’t possess some supernatural gift of healing.
- We have little impact on the course of human governments.
- We can’t solve all the problems of society.
But we aren’t called to do those things, nor are they the most critical.
- We can preach the Word of God to those who gather.
That is the first and most necessary of human needs.

The Greatest Need: God’s Word
📖 The most important thing Jesus did that day wasn’t healing—it was preaching the Word.
In a world chasing quick fixes, we often forget what matters most: the truth of God’s Word. Jesus showed us that forgiveness of sin is far greater than any miracle of the body.
