And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.
Gideon gets a lot of grief over his repeated fleeces to confirm God’s call. People ask, “Why would he need a fleece when he already had the clear Word of God?”
The challenge with fleeces is that our human nature can misread things. We can assign meaning to “signs” that are completely out in left field. I remember hearing about a young pastor asking God for direction on where to serve. As he prayed, he saw a road sign with an arrow and the word north—and concluded that God was telling him to move to the Pacific Northwest.
On the other hand, some oppose the idea of signs because they don’t truly believe God is capable of—or at least willing to—give clear direction. One well-known man advises young people, “If you went to a mission field, led people to Christ, and planted several churches, don’t you suppose God would forgive you if He hadn’t actually called you?” I believe counsel like that has contributed to the doctrinal and practical decline we see in many churches today. Trying to accomplish the mission without the call pushes people to invent man-made substitutes for God’s leading.
“And God did so…”
I count three fleeces from Gideon. God answered every one of them.
God is.
God is capable.
I recommend we do nothing unless God is leading it.
