And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.
We have to be very careful here, because there are those who will claim that God has “cleansed” just about everything.
- They will approve of things that are wild.
- They will approve of things that are immodest.
- They will approve of things that are riotous.
- They will approve of things that are immoral.
Everything from polygamy and homosexuality to abortion has been claimed to be “cleansed” by God.
It’s just not so.
On the other hand, it is also possible for us to be so convinced that our own customs and culture are “of God” that we cannot imagine Him approving of anything outside our ideas. Peter was in that position. He was a believer, but he was conditioned to think as a Jew—under the law.
The correction being made in this passage was not a correction away from Scripture, but a correction back to the Word of God. More importantly, it was a correction back to the God of the Word.
Our application is simple: filter everything through the Bible. It is not liberalism, conservatism, politics, or denomination that should determine our actions, judgments, or fellowship. It is God—and God as He is revealed in the Scriptures.

Acts 10:15 is often quoted—but rarely understood. God’s Word never bends to culture, trends, or personal opinion. Truth is found by going back to the Scriptures and back to the God of the Word.
