Acts 8:14 (KJV) Ordinary Work in Extraordinary Times

Acts 8:14 (KJV)

Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:

These were extraordinary times for the Christian faith. Things that the Word of God clearly says would cease had not yet ceased—indeed, they had barely just begun.

The Word of God was not yet completed.
Believers were just discovering that the gospel was meant for the world and not only for the Jews. Persecution, which had begun with Jesus and intensified with the stoning of Stephen, was becoming widespread, resulting in the scattering of believers, as we see in this passage.

In these extraordinary times, there were extraordinary signs and gifts. But we must not forget that there was also what was meant to be the ordinary working of the Holy Ghost among believers.

When the apostles at Jerusalem heard of the work in Samaria, the ministry in Jerusalem sent Peter and John to see it firsthand.

Upon their arrival:
• They strengthened doctrine
• They prayed for the believers
• They corrected error

Then the Bible says:

Acts 8:25 (KJV)
And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.

They testified.
They preached.
Then they returned to Jerusalem—preaching in many villages along the way.

In many ways, this is the ministry I envision for my final years. Not that I would assume the authority of Peter and John, but that I would simply:

• See ministries in various places firsthand
• Teach and preach as opportunities present themselves
• Testify and encourage as the Lord allows
• Pray for the people of God
• Preach and teach while going to and from

An ambassador of encouragement—sent from my local church simply to be a blessing wherever the opportunity arises.

That seems to me to be ordinary Christian work.
