Ephesians 5:2 (KJV)
And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
The expectations, the requests, the duties of the child of God and the ambassador of Christ in this world are such that one has cause to wonder why we should meet these duties.
There was a time when the price of following God as dear children was very costly — it could mean life or death.
We’re living in a time when it seems to me that very few professing Christians are willing to accept even the most rudimentary expectations of the child of God. Consider the topics of this chapter dealing with husbands and wives, and the sad testimony of Christian marriage in the U.S. these days. Why urge professing Christians to at least live up to their marriage vows?
The answer is Jesus Christ.
Our passage gives us three demonstrations of Christ’s love for us.
He gave Himself as an offering to God.
An offering is a gift. Christ willingly and freely gave Himself to God for us.
He gave Himself as a sacrifice to God.
The most striking word for a sacrifice is victim. Our sin placed us at enmity against God. We were at odds with Him. Our sin had to be paid for, but the price would have been eternal separation from God. Christ loved us so much that He willingly became the victim of our sin.
He gave Himself for a sweet savour.
His sacrifice satisfied God’s wrath against our sin. “He became sin for us, who knew no sin.” In doing so He paid our penalty and satisfied the righteous demand of judgment so that “we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.”
What Christ has done on our behalf is of such magnitude that there is no duty He might require of us that would be too much.
