That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;
I recently had a conversation with a preacher comparing the differences between Peter and John at the tomb of Christ. John ran to the tomb, stopped, and looked inside. Peter, on the other hand, went inside the tomb. This preacher spoke about how John saw and believed, but Peter had to go inside, touch the grave clothes, and handle the evidence.
My mind went immediately to this passage where John speaks of having seen and handled the Word of life. John did not handle the evidence inside the tomb, but he had personally handled the Lord Jesus Christ.
Then I reflected on the accusations of modern unbelievers who insist that John and the other apostles either did not write these New Testament books or else were liars.
That accusation is the essence of every rejection of Jesus Christ. John makes it very clear. He writes to give his eyewitness account of Christ. To accept his account is to have fellowship not only with him, but “with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.” It is essential then to understand that rejecting his account is dismissing him as a liar and refusing fellowship with both the Father and with Jesus.
See how interwoven these essentials are:
• The Bible
• The testimony of the writers
• A genuine relationship with God
