And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
It occurs to me that this attitude of hiding in the dens and rocks of the mountains sounds very much like the mentality of many modern "preppers" and some religious cult-type groups.
Mormons, Seventh-day Adventists, and others have taught a form of this mentality at one time or another.
Some groups, believing Christ would come on a certain day, have gone into the mountains to await His coming.
In effect, they are hiding from the troubles of this life, hoping Christ will come and rescue them.
Our text has men hiding from those same troubles, but instead of looking to God, they are looking to death to be their rescue—the Jim Jones and Hale-Bopp solution, if you will.
Now, our text is set in a different spiritual economy than our own. It takes place during the Tribulation, and no Christian living in this church age will experience the Tribulation. However, we do learn a valuable lesson from it.
God's people are not called to hide from the troubles of this world while awaiting rescue. Though that rescue is indeed promised, our calling is to:
• Completely engage this world.
• Witness with as much vigor as God's grace will give us.
• Do so as long as God gives us breath.

What do you think? Are Christians called to retreat from a troubled world, or to engage it boldly with the gospel until Christ comes?
