Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him:
The passage clearly details Hezekiah's words of encouragement to the people as they faced the trial of siege and the threats of Assyria.
- He tells them not to be afraid.
- He tells them Assyria is outnumbered.
- He tells them the Lord is on their side.
When Sennacherib's servants arrived, they had a message to the people from the king. They essentially countered all of Hezekiah's encouraging words point by point. I wonder, how did Sennacherib know what Hezekiah had said to the people? I think there are two possibilities.
First, there may have been a spy—someone from within the city who told Sennacherib what Hezekiah had said.
While I think this is the less likely of the two possibilities, I know it is possible. Over the years in the ministry, it has amazed, astounded, and greatly disturbed me how often people in our church were so aligned with those intent on hurting the church that they would tell them what was said and done within it.
Second, and I think this is the more likely explanation, Sennacherib knew what Hezekiah would have told the people of Jerusalem because Hezekiah was no secret servant of God.
Hezekiah had been vocal, outspoken, and obvious about his faith. Sennacherib did not believe a word of Hezekiah's testimony, but he may very well have known about it. Of course,
Sennacherib saw no difference between the Lord God of Israel and the false gods of other lands. They were merely tokens in his eyes. He may have paid some sort of homage to a god himself, but in truth he saw himself as greater than any god.
So many people pay some sort of homage to God but really see themselves as the greater god.
Sennacherib learned differently, didn't he?
His mighty men were cut off by a direct act of God. He returned home ashamed and, in what was surely the worst of all outcomes, was killed by his own family.
God is.
Therefore, “Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him.”
