Matthew 22:16 (KJV)
And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men.
It’s important to remember that the things spoken in this passage were meant to entangle Jesus in His talk. These were not sincere words, nor were they entirely accurate.
"Master"
It’s a title of respect, but it can also be used sarcastically or with contempt. In effect, they were saying, "You claim to be a master.”
"We know that thou art true"
They did not know it, nor did they believe it. They knew only that He claimed to be true.
"And teachest the way of God in truth"
They knew that He taught what He claimed was the way of God, but they did not believe it was the truth.
I want to focus on the next statement:
"Neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men."
I believe this is a wicked accusation couched in pious terms.
What is true is that, with God, there is no difference between Jew or Gentile, male or female, bond or free. He loves them all equally. He created them all. Jesus died for all, and God would have all men to be saved and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
God is no respecter of persons.
- He is just.
- He is holy.
- He is Judge.
God does not bend to the whims and wishes of men.
- Sin is judged.
- Hell is real.
- The souls of lost men go there.
That’s all true.
And they hate God for it.
- The alternate lifestyle crowd knows what God’s Word says, and they hate God for it.
- Those who believe in any god you want know what God’s Word says, and they hate God for it.
- Atheists and agnostics generally know the teachings of the Bible, and they hate God for them.
- Jesus said that He is the way, the truth, and the life, and that no man cometh unto the Father but by Him, and they hate Him for it.
Here’s the thing: hate Him or not, no one will ultimately prevail against Him. Every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Jesus is true, and He does teach the way of God in truth.
Come to Him in spirit and in truth, and you will discover that He truly does care very much for you.
