Joshua 8:1-2 (KJV)
And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land:And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourselves: lay thee an ambush for the city behind it.

Many Christians live in fear of the past sins they have committed, wondering if God will ever forgive them. What if, as so many people do, God holds grudges? What if He claims to forgive but, just when you most need a blessing, He brings those sins up again and pounces on you?

This passage answers those fears.

Israel had experienced a devastating loss.

• They had not humbled themselves after the amazing victory in Jericho. 
• They had neglected to examine themselves for uncontested sin. 
• They had judged others while not judging themselves and it had resulted in tragedy. 

Now Ai must be faced again. Would God ever forgive and bless them?

The answer is yes. Once the sin had been addressed God promised to be with them just as He was in Jericho.

Be honest about your sin. Confess it. And then move forward, trusting God to be with you.

Joshua 8:1-2 (KJV) Will God Ever Forgive Me?

And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Bethaven, on the east side of Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai.And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few.

Here is an example of one of the great dangers of success, especially resounding success. Israel immediately forgot about the miraculous aspect of their victory at Jericho. They only saw the victory.

They won so decisively that they instantly assumed there was no enemy that could defeat them. They forgot that they could put themselves at odds with God.

Notice that their next function was to judge others. They went to access the capabilities of Ai.

• They did not look inward to judge themselves 
• They did not look upward to see God’s view 
• They assumed they were fine and everyone else was not. 

There is a place and time for judgment. But it always comes after seeking God and thoroughly examining self.

Joshua 7:2-3 (KJV) The Danger of Success

Joshua 6:24 (KJV)
And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein: only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the LORD.

Here is a principle we see again and again in the Old Testament; the thing that is offered to God is burnt to dust.

There is a symbolic thing that happens there. God, of course, needs nothing. When we give to God in this “careless” way, we acknowledge that. He does not need our gifts. We give out of obedience and worship, not His necessity.

Then too, by burning it up we insure that we don’t come back later to reclaim it. It is gone for good and forever. In much the same way we must view our offerings as gone from us forever. We can’t take them back. We must not force control over them.

Some of the goods from Jericho were kept for the house of the Lord. Our gifts are truly sacrificed; never to be brought up again. At the same time those gifts enter into the treasury of God’s house. There they support the facilities and the ministries of the church.

Joshua 6:24 (KJV) Your Offering, Burnt To Dust

And they commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it.Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: come not near unto it, that ye may know the way by which ye must go: for ye have not passed this way heretofore.

Early in my ministry I learned a lesson, from whom I don’t recall. This lesson has been difficult to practice but I believe is very wise. I have since known numerous pastors[1] who practice this lesson, all of us with the same difficulty. The practice is leading, but with some distance. The pastor must be friendly to all but a friend to none in his congregation. This passage serves to reinforce that lesson.

Israel was about to take a path they had never traveled before. Joshua therefore instructed that, when they saw the priests lift up the ark, they were to arise and follow. But they were cautioned not to get too close. Proximity would have obscured the view.

The same is true of the pastor’s relationship with his congregation. He is close to them. He loves them and they, in return should love him. But familiarity would potentially destroy his ability to lead them. They would never know if they got off track because they had never passed this way before. By the time they were in a position to hear their pastor’s warnings it would likely be to late.

Follow and pray for your pastor, enjoy his fellowship. But don’t ask him to be your best friend.

Joshua 3:3-4 (KJV) Your Pastor, Your Friend

And they answered Joshua, saying, All that thou commandest us we will do, and whithersoever thou sendest us, we will go.According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken unto thee: only the LORD thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses.Whosoever he be that doth rebel against thy commandment, and will not hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him, he shall be put to death: only be strong and of a good courage.

It is the order of things that leadership changes. No matter how strong a leader is, how secure his title, how good a leader he may be or how much the people may wish he might stay in power, we live only so long. Age gets us all.

And so Moses was dead. Joshua had been prepared for the job and was now installed. The people agreed to follow him wholeheartedly. They only asked two things of him:

• That the Lord be with him and
• That he be strong and of good courage

Any group of followers have a right to ask these of their authorities:

Be strong and of good courage
No leader is perfect. We can’t ask that of them. But we can expect them to be prepared, confident and decisive.

Be right with God
Though this expectation has lost value in recent years it shouldn’t have. We know our leaders can’t be perfect. That’s why we depend upon them to be blessed of God.

Joshua 1:16-18 (KJV) What We Expect of our Leaders

And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the LORD commanded Moses.

I imagine that most people think of “the laying on of hands” of preachers, at an ordination of a young preacher, as a formality. It certainly isn’t magical. No bolts fly from the sky and this young preacher still wrestles to grow in his ministry.

But I think a person could say all of that was true of Joshua too. Prior to Moses laying his hands on Joshua:

There were years of personal serviceAs Joshua worked under Moses.

There was observation and growthAs both men watched the other, Joshua was trained and Moses grew in trust of Joshua.

There were battles and trialsWhere Joshua proved himself as a qualified leader for Israel.

But then the Bible says Joshua possessed the spirit of wisdom “for Moses had laid his hands upon him.”

The testing and training and time must not be neglected, but then, neither should our faith in God passing gifts from one preacher to another.

Deuteronomy 34:9 (KJV) Passing On Our Gifts

I would like to be known for the blessings I give before my death.

I don’t mean that, before I die, I get the chance to gather a bunch of people around me and say, “Bless you.” I mean I would like to be commonly known for being one that both is a blessing and gives out blessings.

• I want to be known for my faith in God
• I want to be known for my walk with Him and
• I want to be known for bringing the blessings God has given me to those around me

Deuteronomy 33:1 (KJV) Giving Out Blessings

I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession;

I love this phrase, “quickeneth all things.”

Quicken means to make alive. The assumption then is that He gives life to all who have life. I think we might expand upon that to say He gives all things their purpose. He energizes, empowers and enables us to use all that He gives us well.

It might have to do with God blessing or sanctifying:

• A building
• A pulpit

• For the craftsman, his tools
• For a driver, his vehicle 
• For an author, his book
• For a hymnist, his music 

We often dedicate things and ask God to use them for His glory. In the battle for souls God may “quicken” whatever is in our hand to bring others to a saving knowledge of Christ.

1 Timothy 6:13 (KJV) Blessing What You Have

And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.

Moses was about to wrap up his ministry. Deuteronomy is, if you will, his swan song. When it is completed he must bid his nation adieu.

Now, in these final chapters, we witness the change of command. The baton is about to be passed from Moses to Joshua. This seasoned leader knows something of what lay ahead for Joshua. He also has some experience with the emotions that must be racing through his prodigy. His concern was about the fear in Joshua’s heart. Moses attempted to calm those fears with this doctrine, “the Lord, He it is that doth go before thee.”

• It wasn’t Moses before him
• It wasn’t the fathers of his faith before him
• It wasn’t his enemies before him and
• It wasn’t Israel before him

It was the Lord who led his way.

Too much faith is placed today on forces other than the Lord. When we see Christ in the front line we know we have nothing to fear.

Deuteronomy 31:8 (KJV) It Is The Lord

Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

The one speaking of coming is Paul. The one he writes to is the pastor, Timothy. The application I have must be taken with those things in mind. Nevertheless there is an exhortation that is far reaching.

I am reminded that we await the promised coming of Jesus Christ
We do not know how long we will wait. We only know that we have this promise and that we must occupy until He comes.

I also remember that, though Timothy is a pastor, he is also a believer
The preacher has a role to fill but he does so within the framework of his own faith. He, like those in his church, is first a believer.

Until Jesus comes we would all do well to give attendance to reading, exhortation and doctrine.

1 Timothy 4:13 (KJV) Things We Would All Do Well To Do

And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them:

It seems fairly universal to understand the head as one of leadership and dignity and the tail as one of lower station.

It is a blessing to be a leader. There is responsibility and burden associated with leadership and authority but also blessing. The Christian must not shy away from responsibility. It is appropriate and right for us to accept our standing and give honor to those above us. It is also completely appropriate for us to

• Recognize whatever position of leadership we have been given
• Accept that position wholeheartedly and
• Fulfill it fervently 

It is neither spiritual nor a sign of genuine humility to shrink from it.

As I read this I cannot help but return to 2 Thessalonians 3:1-2
Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you:And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith

Paul says in 1 Timothy, “First of all …pray” and in 2 Thessalonians, “Finally…pray.”

• Prayer is the first thing 
• Prayer is the last thing and
• Prayer is the best thing 

any Christian may engage in.

Oh, there are many other things that Christians should do. But I am afraid that we have made those things the priorities at the neglect of real, fervent, effectual prayer.

1 Timothy 2:1-3 (KJV) First, Last and Best

1 Timothy 1:1-2 (KJV)
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.

As I read this today I was reminded of another greeting Paul wrote, 1 Thessalonians 1:1 Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians which is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

In other letters, and at other times in his life, Timothy was included in the letter as being with Paul. Now, Paul is writing a letter to Timothy.

I wonder if, as Paul wrote these words, he reflected back to those earlier days? I wonder, as Timothy read this letter, if he pictured Paul in his mind writing it?

Things change. Time move on and life happens to us. I do not know that Paul knew, when he told Timothy to abide in Ephesus, that it would fall out as it did. I imagine years had passed since they parted company. Paul had been kept in Caesarea for two years. It had been at least that long, probably many more. Still Timothy abode where Paul had placed him and Paul, though by this time a prisoner, still actively served God in writing.

Times change. Circumstances change. Our service to God and our doctrine and practice must not.

1 Timothy 1:1-2 (KJV) Don’t Change in Change

2 Thessalonians 3:1-2 (KJV)
Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you:And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.

Some time ago, while studying the book of Ephesians, I came to chapter six and verse ten. “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.” The passage goes on to describe the whole armor of God. I concluded that the word, finally, did not mean he was finally finished, as in “last thought”. Finally meant he had, at last, arrived at the point of his letter – the key, the crescendo. Everything Paul said before Ephesians 6:10 was intended to prepare us for what he said after Ephesians 6:10.

I don’t believe the “finally” of this verse has the same import as that verse, but maybe it would not hurt for Christians to think that way a bit.

We don’t put as much emphasis on praying for our pastors as we ought. The work they do is the most eternally important work in this world. The devil has planted plenty of adversaries in the path of the preacher and his anointing and ability to accomplish his work in the power of the Holy Spirit and not the flesh is critical.

Pray for your preacher like it is the most important thing you could ever pray for!

2 Thessalonians 3:1-2 (KJV) Your Most Important Prayer

When the host goeth forth against thine enemies, then keep thee from every wicked thing.

There is never a right time to do a wrong thing. The thing that is wicked is wicked every day, at all times, in any place and under any circumstances.

Do not do wrong.

But there are, in the Bible, certain times when a special sanctification to the Lord is called for.

• Moses need only put off his shoes while at the burning bush
• Israel need only cleanse their homes of leaven during the Passover season 
• Fasting is not necessary for answers to every prayer 

But in some extreme cases, answers can only be gotten through fasting and prayer. And in times of national crisis, such as when our armies are in combat, a time of national cleansing, confession of sin and revival is in order.

Not sense WWII has the United States rallied behind our troops in sacrifice and prayer.

Not until we return to that will we experience God’s intervention in those crises.

Deuteronomy 23:9 (KJV) In Times of Crisis
