1 Peter 2:1-3 (KJV) As Newborn Babes

1 Peter 2:1-3 (KJV)
Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
We often cite this passage to teach that the brand new Christian is a newborn babe in Christ. This is not what the passage teaches. These, likely more experienced Christians, were here admonished to behave themselves as newborn babes would. They were to do that,
In their behavior
By laying aside malice, guile, hypocrisy, envy and evil speaking.
Notice that this is a choice they were to make, a choice we are to make. It’s not natural. It is against our nature. We are to think of that little babe and use it as our model of behavior.
In their preference
Desiring the sincere milk of the Word.
Christians of any maturity level ought to desire, long for and enjoy the simple, clear and most basic doctrines of the Bible.
In their tastes
Here is the only qualifier in the passage. If in fact we have tasted and experienced the graciousness of the Lord that grace ought to be reflected in our choosing those things that make us as newborn babes.
