1 Samuel 30:1-4
And it came to pass, when David and his men were come to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the south, and Ziklag, and smitten Ziklag, and burned it with fire;
And had taken the women captives, that were therein: they slew not any, either great or small, but carried them away, and went on their way.
So David and his men came to the city, and, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captives.
Then David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept, until they had no more power to weep.
1 Samuel 31:2
And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, Saul's sons.
I placed these two verses together because they seem to imply the same truth. Good people have bad things happen to them too.
David was a good man, yet while he and his men were away his own family (and the families of his men) were attacked and taken captive. Jonathan was a good friend of David. He had covenanted with him that when David was king he would be at his side. Yet Jonathan died in battle as well as his father.
Yesterday I had lunch with my son, Bohannan. Bo commented that when bad things happen they can be classified in one of three groups.
Sometimes it is the chastening of the Lord
Sometimes it happens to teach us something
Sometimes it happens just because the "rain falls on the just and on the unjust."
I would add to that that many times God allows a believer to go through a difficult time simply because there is someone else going through that difficult time who will need the encouragement and support they can get from a Christian who trusts God through it.
