Jeremiah 51:56 KJV
Because the spoiler is come upon her, even upon Babylon, and her mighty men are taken, every one of their bows is broken: for the LORD God of recompences shall surely requite.
Here is a seldom used name of God. Christians like to make mention of Him as
God our peace
God our righteousness
God our provider
But I can't remember ever hearing anyone make a big deal out of the fact that God is also called "The Lord God of recompenses."
The word recompense means a reward. In the context, it is obvious that this is not a favorable but rather a negative reward. Babylon, who was so used of God to bring judgment upon Israel for their sins, must not assume that God's using them justifies their own wickedness. God, through Jeremiah, promises sure recompense upon them.
And let no man think that because he has gotten away with sin and perhaps has even prospered in it, that God has somehow approved of his unrighteousness.
There is even a time to call on the Lord as our “Lord God of recompenses.”
When we feel abused and mistreated.
When we see this world’s most wicked seeming to prosper.
When the arrows of judgment are flung at us.Then is a time to trust in the Lord God of recompenses. He will make it all turn right in His time.
