The Interpretation Thereof

Daniel 5:8 KJV
Then came in all the king's wise men: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof.

1 Corinthians 2:14 KJV
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Belshazzar's wisest men could, the Bible says, neither read nor interpret (or understand) the writing of God on the wall. That reminds me of the fact that God's Word, the Bible can only be received by a spiritual person. The wisest men in this world will gain nothing from the Bible if they are not godly men as well.

They could not read the writing.
A man who has no real relationship with the Lord will find he is not able to read the Bible either. Oh, he can read the words, but the motivation to spend serious time with the Bible will not be there. He may pick it up a moment or two and look at a couple of verses but that will be about all. He might try to read the Bible, but his mind will wander to other things he finds more important or interesting.

They could not make known the interpretation. When the man who has little or no relationship with God does manage to read a little of the Bible, he will find the book lifeless to him. They will be just so many words.
There will be nothing that gives comfort
There will be nothing that gives direction
There will be nothing that feeds his soul

But a spiritual man; now that is a different story. The spiritual man craves the Word of God. He esteems it better than his necessary food and when he reads it or hears it preached, it always has what he needs.
