Too Many For Me

Judges 7:2 KJV
And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.

We sure do love the numbers mentality in our churches today. We have forgotten that David was chastened for judging Israel and that God would not allow Gideon to enter battle with too many soldiers. Of course there are other Scriptures where numbers do count so it all has to be in balance. It is important to keep track of certain numbers so we do the best job possible in ministering to souls. But we also must remember who gives every victory.

Gideon's army was pared down to a number that could not possible win a military battle. His three hundred men, armed with only a trumpet, and empty pitcher and a lamp inside the pitcher faced a challenge that was beyond all human skill. Only God could have wrought this victory!

We are too quick to put into place plans of action that are worldly and designed to succeed rather than to simply trust the Lord and obey Him. We follow after
Church growth gurus,
Self appointed experts, and other
So called spiritual consultants

We search the country for those who seem to have been successful and we do what they do hoping for the same results. Whatever happened to just obeying the Lord.

Gideon's men only had
A lamp - the Word of God
A pitcher - their body to bear that light, this vessel had to be broken before it was effective
A trumpet - their voice to herald the Word

And with that, even the smallest band of believers can do great things for the Lord.
