Proverbs 8:1-4 KJV
Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice?
She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths.
She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors.
Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man.
Wisdom can be a reference to one of several things:
It is a quality a man ought to aspire to. We gain this wisdom by knowledge coupled with experience
It is treasure that is passed down from a father to a son. Proverbs is written under this analogy (though it is not necessary to hold that this is the only application in the Proverbs)
It is a unique characteristic of God who is the only all wise One.
A.W. Pink suggests that the wisdom of Proverbs refers to the righteous and the fool of Proverbs to the wicked
It is also obviously a reference to the Person of Jesus Christ, of whom the description of wisdom in Proverbs 8 can only apply
Now here is the thing that grabs my attention today; this wisdom is so ACTIVE. This wisdom is not a passive thing that lies on a table waiting someone to pick it up and make it their own. This wisdom, like God after Adam in the Garden of Eden pursues us. This is not a wisdom that can only belong to those who mental capacities are capable of attaining it. This is something that attains to us.
So the one who lacks it does so of His own volition. Wisdom cries and searches us out. She is in the top of the high places and it is by the places of the paths. She is like the steeples on the churches that stretch heaven-ward pointing men to Christ. She is like the Spiritual billboards that ring out a message as we drive by them. If there is anything that may make one miss it, it is when we do not frequent those places where men and women ought to be.
How foolish is the one who stops his ears at her voice!
