Proverbs 3:3 KJV
Let not
mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the
table of thine heart:
Mercy and Truth are here
presented as having a quality of personality. It is as if they have the ability
to turn away from a person at their will. This makes them sound synonymous with
the Holy Spirit, who can be quenched and grieved.
And truly I have met
people whose character is such as to appear to have been forsaken by mercy and
truth.

No amount of teaching seems capable of
bringing them to the truth of the Scriptures and

No amount of appeal softens their harsh
temperament
This passage ascribes to
the reader the ability to bind mercy and truth to them. We have the capacity,
if we will see to it, that we are not forsaken of these indispensable
qualities. None need be bereft of either mercy or truth. We must only write
them onto the table of our heart. I take this to mean that they are welded to
our character through the Word of God. But not merely the study of the Bible; I
know a number of people who know what the Bible says but who do not do as the
Bible says. I mean the regular consumption of God's Word so that it becomes who
we are. Too many Christians, (and far too many of those are pastors), have
learned to use the Bible to get their agenda passed. We need rather to let the
Bible get its agenda passed onto our hearts.
That will change the
world.
