The Preparations of the Heart

Proverbs 16:1 KJV
The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD.

The commentaries mostly say that this verse offers a contrast so that it means that men can make all the plans they want, God gets the final word. But I prefer to understand it just as it reads; that God both prepares ours hearts and gives us the answer of our tongues. We are free moral agents. But we will learn in the final day that we have done nothing but that God had not first decreed it.

I find more comfort in the assurance that God is in control than I can give expression. Only those who on the outside of a relationship with the Lord would question the goodness of God in whatever preparations He has proposed in the hearts of men. I, for instance, am not perturbed by the thought that some have been condemned to hell because they lived in a land without a Christian witness. I am sure that God has gotten a missionary to every man in every age who would have listened.

  • God’s plan for salvation for the believer
  • God’s sentence of condemnation upon the unbeliever

  • God’s rapture of the saved before the Tribulation
  • God’s delusion upon the lost during the Tribulation

  • God’s sentence of the lost to the Lake of Fire
It is all within the ranges of the goodness of the Lord.

And I will trust Him.
