So Close to Truth

John 19:7-11 KJV
The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;
And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.
Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?
Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

Pilate was so close to the truth. Having heard that Jesus claimed to be the Son of God he became afraid and inquired of the Lord about it. It should not surprise us that Jesus did not answer; it is the work of the Holy Spirit to convict and it is apparent that conviction already existed. It was then up to Pilate to respond to that conviction; a responsibility Pilate never carried to conclusion.

How many are those who stand at the doorstep of eternal salvation! There they stand, with Christ in their sight, but unwilling to take that one step of faith. The more zealous Christians want to just push them ahead. It would be wise for us to see that Christ Himself took no action but left Pilate to his own convictions. Great damage has been done to the eternal cause of Christ by forcing a profession of faith onto one whose own conviction has not brought them to it. Perhaps the cause of such wickedness in modern Christianity can be laid at this doorway.

Oh for the souls of those men and women who experience the conviction of the Holy Spirit! How we ought to pray for them.
  • May God grant them grace to take that final step of faith
  • May Satan's hindrances not prevail to keep them from Christ
  • May the child of God have that discernment as to speak in such a way that many believe but not manipulate a profession that is not born of genuine faith.
