1 Corinthians 2:10
KJV
But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit
searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
Over the centuries much damage
has been done by those who have claimed to have received a special revelation
of God's will. People have been swept up into error because they felt compelled
to heed this new revelation given to one man or woman and therefore not verifiable.
But this verse, rather than giving precedence to the practice of these special
revelations, is actually an antidote for them. Paul, I believe, refers to the
New Testament as that which has been revealed to us through the Spirit. No
saved person need ever be held captive to those who claim these special revelations
because we have God's revealed Word in the Bible and illuminated in our hearts
through the Holy Spirit.
The only Christian ever held
hostage to error is that Christian who will not search the Scriptures. The
Bible, rightly divided, always frees its subjects.
