1 Peter 3:8 KJV
Finally, be ye all of one mind, having
compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:
I think
of the word pitiful as an adjective describing something
- Deplorable
- Substandard
- Rejected.
Here it
is used as a verb describing an action I am to do.
The use of
words changes over time. It does not mean that I should change the Bible to fit
our new meaning but that I should study the Bible to ensure I am getting the
correct understanding of a passage.
The phrase
means that
- I ought to have sympathy for the afflicted
- I ought to be aware if them and of their
battle
- I ought to exercise pity for them
