Luke 9:44 KJV
Let these
sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into
the hands of men.
The disciples
had just seen the glorified Lord. They had heard the voice of the Father
endorse Christ and they had witnessed the miracle of the casting out of the
demon and the praises of the people on that occasion. It appears they were
still speaking about that when Jesus changed the conversation and told them to
let the truth of His death sink deeply into their ears.
The next verse
says that though He had told them to get hold of it, they understood not
because it was hidden from them. And it was hidden not because God had hidden
it (Jesus had just revealed it to them) but because they held on to the Jewish
idea that the Messiah would come only as a conquering king. Though the Bible
plainly told them of His suffering, the Jews had dismissed it.
Albert Barnes
uses this to suggest that the proper way to learn from the Bible is to cast out
any ideas we might have about what the Bible says and solely submit to God and
His Word.
I see this as
the only hope for Christianity today. True Baptists don't copy what anyone in
the past has done. We only believe and follow the Bible. While we might learn
from the past, we must never turn the past into our dogma.
- We do not follow a
denomination
- We do not follow a
movement
- We do not follow a
human historical group (except to see that the gates of hell have not
prevailed against Gods church)
We follow
Christ as He is found within the pages of the Scripture.
Anything else
will lead to error
Everything else
is the result of the error of following the teachings of men rather than the
Bible.
