Numbers 20:3 KJV
And the people chode with Moses, and spake,
saying, Would God that we had died when our brethren died before the LORD!
The people seemed to have held on to a grudge against Moses because of
the judgment of God against Korah. It was not enough that they were angry with
Moses after Korah and his party were swallowed up of the earth. How could
anyone have not recognized that as the dealings of God? Indeed they here profess
that they died "before The Lord". Knowing
full well it was the work of God, they still murmured against Moses here
because of it.
Those who profess to know the Lord and will admit that He is active in
our world may nevertheless turn their evil spirit against those that God uses.
Their real target is God but He is out of reach. Those
- Who serve Him
- Are faithful to Him and
- Keep their testimony for God
are much easier to get at.
But note that this crowd did eventually damage Moses and Aaron. Their
constant complaining and murmuring finally broke Moses, who was the meekest of
men, down and he disobeyed God and in anger assumed to produce the water on his
own, and smote the rock instead of simply speaking to it.
Faithfulness to God is our most valuable asset and it is the thing Satan
would most like to take from us.
