Matthew 3:9 KJV
And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
The Pharisees thought they were safe with God because of their relationship with Abraham. John's message to them was, as Albert Barnes puts it, "a matter of small consequence". They reasoned that their heritage put them in good standing before God. John the Baptist urged them to put away such thoughts.
Men make up many means to justify themselves before the Lord. All such justifications are "a matter of small consequence" in the eyes of God. He has settled our standing on the basis of Jesus Christ. In 1 John 5:12 the Bible says,
He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
Any other argument:
- I am a good person
- I keep the Ten Commandments
- I have been baptized
- I am a church member
is "a matter of small consequence".
