Romans 4:23-24 KJV
Now it was not written for his sake alone, that
it was imputed to him;
But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if
we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
The account of Abraham's faith is one that encourages any believer who
takes the time to read and consider it:
- He stepped out for God not knowing where he went
- He stayed faithful to God, picking himself up after each fall
- He believed God even when God's promise was impossible
- He was rewarded by God, not for his works but for his faith
These verses tell
us why Abraham's story is such an encouragement to us; it is witten not simply
as a record of what happened to Abraham but as an example of what God wills
"for us also".
The story of
Abraham is the story of everyone who believes God.
The principle
extends beyond Abraham, however, to the whole of the Word of God. No portion of
the Bible, when rightly interpreted, is meant for only those about whom and to
whom it was originally written. Every Word of God is "for us also".
