Philippians 2:1 KJV
If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,
The word "if" places a condition upon the apostle's exhortation and there are four conditions provided:
- If there be any consolation in Christ
- If any comfort of love
- If any fellowship of the Spirit
- If any bowels and mercies
If these four conditions are met then Paul says we ought to "Fulfil ye my joy…"
These conditions are not listed as a question but rather as a demonstration that each and every one of them have been met for the believe in Jesus Christ.
- There is indeed consolation in Christ
- There is no doubt comfort of love from God
- There is without question fellowship of the Spirit and
- There is surely bowels and mercies
Every Christian senses them. We all go through times when our closeness to Christ is less ardent than at other times, but for the most part, we hold these near to our hearts and count them as treasures.
Since these conditions are met and we do not argue them; Paul's natural movement is toward action on our part. We have experienced
- This consolation
- This comfort
- This fellowship and
- This tender mercy
We therefore ought to extend to others the same.
