Romans 4:9 KJV
Cometh this
blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also?
for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
I was struck by those words
of the Apostle, "for we say…" What is to follow is
his fundamental argument. It is the basis of everything he preaches about
Christ. "For we
say" is an assertion but, also something Paul treats
as a point already conceded.
Abraham
was reckoned righteous before God by faith and before circumcision.
The point Paul was arguing is that therefore both Jew and Gentile
can be of the righteous family of Abraham because it comes not of heritage or
of ceremony; the children of righteousness are born into that family by faith.
