Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
Peter writes, he says, to a people who have obtained “like precious faith.” The object obtained is faith. The adjectives define and describe that faith
It is like faithThere is a difference in faiths. One is not the same as or as good as another. The old phrase “it doesn’t matter what you believe so long as you are sincere” is a falsehood. It does matter. Peter looked for those who had obtained faith like his.
It is precious faithThe adjective describes something’s value or worth as in “precious metals.” It is often associated with rarity. Those metals have value because there is little of it. The word also has attached some sense of emotion. They are precious jewels because they are enjoyed by the owner. A daughter is often called precious by her father.
This faith of Peter’s is rare. It is a small number of people who come to possess it. And all those who do possess it find it to be precious to their heart.
