Revelation 5:11 (KJV) Prerequisite to Perception

Revelation 5:11 (KJV)
And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;
The Bible says John first beheld and then heard. These two are prerequisite to perceiving and grasping a thing as true.
When the disciples asked Jesus, “Where dwellest thou?” He didn’t respond to them by saying, “Sit down boys. Let me tell you.” He said to them, “Come and see.”
Some things are better shown than taught. How could John have ever grasped what heaven is like if he hadn’t beheld it?
  • The Angels
  • The elders
  • The beasts around the throne
These can never be fully comprehended without having seen them. Likewise there are some things about our faith that cannot be explained, they must be experienced. John spoke concerning Jesus of seeing, hearing and handling Him.
  • Only a believer can understand the sense of liberty when we are set free of sin.
  • Only one whose spirit speaks to the Holy Spirit can grasp what it means that the Spirit witnesses to our spirit that we are the sons of God.
  • Only the one who has cried out to God, “Abba, Father ” can know the joy of such a relationship.
On the other hand, experience is no substitute for the preaching and exposition of God’s message to man. “Faith cometh by hearing.” God has given us His Word and men equipped by Him to give us the understanding of it.
It is through both seeing and hearing that we come to perceive and understand:
  • God
  • His Word, and
  • His plan revealed in His Word
