Proverbs 26:12 (KJV)
Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.
Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.
It doesn’t take much thinking to discern what the Bible thinks of the fool. There are eleven verse previous to this one occupied with the wrongs of the fool:
- They gave no honor
- They need to be beaten like an animal
- They are impossible to answer
- They are unreliable
- They are blind and deaf to truth
- They will be judged
- They will not receive correction
And that’s just what is in this one chapter of this one book. No wonder Jesus warns is not to call a man a fool. It is a worse thing to be a fool than most people suspect!
But there is something worse than being a fool – being conceited.
- To think too highly of ourselves
- To think of ourselves as better than others
- To refuse instruction because we think we know better.
This, as bad as being foolish is, is even worse yet.
