Acts 1:18-19 (KJV)
Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.

I am struck that the Apostle’s concern was not that the whole city knew about Judas:
- His testimony as an apostle of Jesus
- His betrayal of Jesus for money
- His attempt to reverse what he had done
- His suicide
- His money’s use to buy the potter’s field
The whole city knew but Peter was not concerned how it would impact their perception of Jesus. He was only interested in moving forward with the message of the Gospel.
We are perhaps too worried about the world’s perception of the failures of some of Christ’s followers. The issue should not be to prevent the failures (Jesus did not try to prevent Judas’ betrayal) or how to spin the news so not to hurt the cause of Christ. The issue should simply be to get another man to stand in his gap and press on.
Peter’s plan of action was threefold:
- He acknowledged the loss
- He reviewed its biblical prophecy
- He encouraged forward motion
And then he took action toward that motion.
There is no reason we ought to lose heart when someone loses heart. We are forewarned in God’s Word it will happen. Acknowledge the loss, find a replacement and keep walking with Christ.
