Genesis 38:27-30 (KJV)
And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.

Types and pictures we might find in the Bible are, necessarily, imperfect. It is impossible that the shadow be exactly as the body. Nevertheless there is profit in exercising the spirit in meditation on those pictures we find within the Holy Word.

We have twins: 

• One will be the line from which our Savior is born
• The other will be a line of souls in need of salvation[1]

The one on which the scarlet thread is tied seeks first placeThe flesh of man forever seeks some means of self-redemption. We struggle with the Spirit. We want worship. We want first place, even before God.

But Christ will ultimately prevailWe may not see it today. We might, as it were, tie the first place ribbon on the flesh but it is in haste. Christ will be Lord and every knee shall bow.

Christ is of such grace that it is even among those who fight to defeat Him He offers the scarlet thread of redemption.

[1] This is not to say those in Pharez’s lineage need no saving. Remember, it is an imperfect picture.
