Numbers 20:12 (KJV)
And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.

Included among those who had a heart of unbelief and died on the other side of the Jordan are Aaron and more shockingly, Moses.

It is possible to be a believer, a follower of Jesus and still have a heart of unbelief. It doesn’t mean that you won’t go to heaven but it does mean:

• Your testimony for God is not what it should be
• The Lord will rebuke you and
• You will come short of all that might have been 

Moses’s failure seems so slight doesn’t it? He was supposed to speak to the rock and he smote it instead. (Notice too that he and Aaron took responsibility for the water that came from the rock.) All of Israel had survived the death angel in Egypt. They had all crossed the Red Sea. But most of them had a heart of unbelief at Kadesh Barnea. The Kohathites were commissioned of God and had wonderful duties for the Lord. But they too had a heart of unbelief concerning God’s role for Moses in relationship to them.

Christians too may possess a heart of unbelief. It doesn’t mean they are not saved. It means they are not right with God as they might be. Faith, believing God in the details and obeying him in them, is the difference between rewards in heaven and just having a place in heaven.
