Deuteronomy 5:3 (KJV) Something Old, Something New

Deuteronomy 5:3 (KJV)
The LORD made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.
God did make a covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob but it was different than this Mosaic covenant. God never annulled His promises to them but added to and refined them for Israel. He did the same thing in the New Testament. By giving us a new covenant God did not dispose of the previous. He fulfilled it in Jesus. Our covenant is predicated upon the other.
There is, I think, an application to be made to the individual. What God wants to do in our lives is:
  • Current
  • Personal and
  • Unique
but it is not isolated. Neither does it depart from what was accomplished in our brethren of the past. It builds upon it. It has its foundation in God’s work in the Old Testament, New Testament and church history.
We have:
  • Our own call
  • Our own challenges and
  • Our own culture in which we serve the Lord
but in addressing those differences we must not abandon what our fathers laid for us.
