Philippians 2:27 (KJV) The Preacher’s Lot

Philippians 2:27 (KJV)
For indeed he was sick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.
Sorrow upon sorrow.
The book of Philippians is one of the most positive things Paul wrote; maybe the most positive. Yet even in this book he admits he had sorrow and that, had Epaphroditus died, the sorrow added to his sorrow may have been more than he could bear.
Here is the lot of the Biblical preacher. He bears a burden that is overwhelming, except Christ sustain him. Spurgeon once wrote, “Depression is the lot of the preacher. God will not share His glory.” The preacher wisely seldom reveals his heartache. He lives above the burden only through Christ lifting him over it. But it is there.
  • His weakness
  • His inability to win the souls of all he would like
  • His heartbreak over the backslider
  • His sense of failure that his message was not sufficient to minister to one or another in the congregation
These things weight on him.
But God has mercy. The burden is never so much he cannot continue. Only enough that he must rest in Jesus to carry on.
