Joshua 9:3-6 (KJV)
And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy. And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us.

Seems to me that there are a bunch of folks like this in churches. Christian history is filled with accounts of wily workers. These are people who, for any number of reasons, have made a league and joined a church group.
- They may have been afraid of God
- They may have been impressed with the congregation
- They may have seen an opportunity for improvement
Whatever the reason, they never met Jesus and they never became part of the family. They are (technically) members of the church but they have no fellowship with the Holy Spirit. They go about serving Christianity in the power of the flesh. They are unhappy and they are ineffective unless they can overpower others or buy their influence.
True believers are far from perfect but they are born again into God’s family.
