2 Samuel 20:11 (KJV)
And one of Joab’s men stood by him, and said, He that favoureth Joab, and he that is for David, let him go after Joab.
And one of Joab’s men stood by him, and said, He that favoureth Joab, and he that is for David, let him go after Joab.
Joab, I think, was loyal to David’s kingdom but not to David. He used David’s obvious blessing as a means to gain his own status and power. Never as great as David, still Joab wielded a mighty sword; one he would swing, from time to time, in opposition to David’s will.
I have often said that a person is never truly loyal unless they are loyal when they do not agree.
- A wife to her husband
- A soldier to his officer
- An employee to his employer
- A church member to his pastor
This is not to say loyalty is always compliance. Our first loyalty is always to the Lord. We must obey God rather than men, even when that man is a superior. However:
- Loyalty would never do harm to a leader
- Loyalty would yield unless it is impossible to do so
- Loyalty would forever seek the good of those we are loyal to
Joab’s disloyalty to David would eventually cost his life. There is always a price for such behavior as his.
