2 Samuel 23:37 (KJV)
Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Beerothite, armourbearer to Joab the son of Zeruiah,

Joab, the general, who seems so prominent in David’s reign, is only mentioned, in the list of David’s mighty men, as a point of reference. Both of his brother’s are listed, including the one who was killed by Abner. Even Joab’s armor bearer is listed as a mighty man.

Not Joab.

• Perhaps he is stricken from the list because of his disloyalty
• Perhaps Joab was never personally a great warrior.

Ability to lead does not always translate into ability to do. The only records of Joab actually taking a life was always cold blooded, pre-conceived murder and always involved some sort of deceit.. He may not have been a daring and skilled soldier at all!

Position and title doesn’t make one mighty. Neither does getting your name written down. Joab was always in the middle of things but he was never the one doing things.

In the end, he died like a coward.
