1 Kings 1:1 (KJV)
Now king David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat.
Now king David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat.
I am reminded today, as I finish 2 Samuel and begin 1 Kings, that chronologically there is a space of approximately 350 years between them.
- Proverbs
- Ecclesiastes
- Song of Solomon
- Isaiah
- Jeremiah (part of it at least)
Were all written in the mean time.
The book of Isaiah does not repeat portions of the history of the Kings. Rather, they repeat portions of Isaiah.
This is not to say that 1 and 2 Kings are less inspired. Modern scholars have suggested that exiled Jews “made up” this history to give their people an exaggerated sense of identity. I object! I see the writing of these exiled Jews as the work of Providence. God placed them in a time and situation, which compelled them to complete their story. Jesus quoted from the post-exilic prophets. These were not people with a puffed up sense of national pride but with the full sense of the purpose of God upon them.
I question those who question the Bible. They have:
- Too low a view of God
- Too secular a view of Jesus and
- Too high a view of themselves
