1 Kings 2:15 (KJV) By The People, For The People

1 Kings 2:15 (KJV)
And he said, Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their faces on me, that I should reign: howbeit the kingdom is turned about, and is become my brother’s: for it was his from the LORD.
Adonijah’s deceit is seen in a number of ways:
  • He Approached Bath-Sheba, not Solomon for this request
  • He appealed to her for something that would surely have strengthened his position as a rival to the throne of Solomon
  • He claimed to be submissive to the will of God
The kingdom, he told her, had been his but he yielded it to Solomon, supposedly because he knew that was God’s will.
Notice a clear distinction between two sources of kingdom authority:
The authority that is by the will of the people
This was Saul’s source of authority. Once he had it, it would have been against the will of God to resist it, but it was not of God. Adonijah admitted that his authority would have been of the same vein.
The authority that is by the will of God
This was David’s source of authority. It was also the source of what was Solomon’s kingdom.
The United States is blessed, I believe, to have a government “by the people, for the people.” It is right and proper for us to pray for our leaders and submit to this government. But we must be careful not to confuse this with a government of God. It is the best that men have come up with but it is not the one to which we must give absolute loyalty. That is reserved for the kingdom of God.
