2 Chronicles 16:12 (KJV)
And Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the LORD, but to the physicians.
And Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the LORD, but to the physicians.
Asa’s sin was not solely that he sought physicians instead of the Lord for his help. His sin is one of holding a grudge against God.
Asa had been a godly king and the nation had been blessed because of it. For decades they had been at peace under his reign. But finally Israel, tired of watching her citizens defect into the South, built the city of Ramah to prevent further defections. Asa sought the help of the Assyrians against Israel.
- It was in this instance that he sought the help of man before the help of God.
- It was here that he should have prayed first and acted later.
God sent to Asa a preacher to rebuke and correct him but rather than repent, Asa grew angry. He cast the preacher into prison and, in his sullen condition, went on with his life. Though the Bible doesn’t tell us much more, I can imagine that from this point on most every decision was founded on his grudge against God. We are informed he oppressed some of the people at this time.
The next and really last detail we have is of his death. He developed a disease in his feet that waxed exceeding great until it killed him.
- Rather than seeking the help of the Lord
- Rather than repenting and turning back to God
Asa died, perhaps surrounded by doctors, but with his face hardened against God.
How much better it is to confess our sin quickly! How much better to repent early and keep our heart tender toward God and those He loves!
